Camera Obscura is a unique online encyclopedia and provenance research project that not only celebrates Lithuania's rich and abundant pre-Second World War Jewish photographic heritage, but that also mourns its loss with the inclusion of an unprecedented provenance research project to locate, translate and make publicly available all surviving data that relates to the mass looting, expropriation, devastation and displacement of the untold millions of Jewish cultural artefacts—including somewhere in the region of eight million Lithuanian Jewish photographic prints and negatives—that took place during both the Nazi and the Soviet occupations of Lithuania between September 19, 1939 and May 8, 1945.
